As many of us are looking forward to embracing the Fall season in New York City. Shapely is excited to feature this plus size wonder woman and September Fatshionable Style Icon, Alex Aspasia. From poverty to embracing and overcoming any obstacle that is in her way, Alex is definitely fearless. Checkout the interview below to learn more about this fashionista and plus size digital content creator.

What inspires your style?

My style is inspired by the idea of “sexy chic.” I love to emulate my look from iconic American sex symbols such as Marilyn Monroe, Eartha Kitt, Dorothy Dandridge, Anna Nicole Smith, and even fictional characters like Jessica Rabbit and Joan Harris. I love to emphasize my feminine curves in clothing that is perfectly suited to my measurements while remaining fearless in being bold and daring. In order to keep my style classy, I usually go for skirts, maxi dresses with slits, a cold shoulder, sweetheart necklines, and beautiful jewelry to pull it all together.

My style is more about the fit and less about the look. I believe, as a plus sized woman, we did not have many options growing up and in result my style was created. During my days, I am often stopped by many when I go places and complimented on my style. I believe people are drawn to the fit of an outfit and the way it emphasizes my curves rather than the print or pieces individually. Nevertheless, I believe people are drawn to my confidence and sex appeal that I have fully embraced.

This month Shapely is focused on how our readers can get ready for back-to-school, back-to-work, resetting and preparing oneself for success. What does your Fall reset look like?

My Fall reset requires a lot of me time and rest. That includes many things like getting my beauty sleep and doing things for myself that I enjoy. As a content creator, I am constantly working around the clock. I value my sleep and rest because it’s the only time I can give back to myself and reward myself for all my hard work. I encourage others to find things that make them feel relaxed and cozy and that they really enjoy. Take time for yourself without feeling any guilt this Fall season.

I noticed the more positivity and confidence I gave in this world, the more it came back to me. It’s a beautiful thing when you can simultaneously help others and yourself!

What can people learn from plus size influencers, like yourself?

The most important lesson I want people to understand is that you are worthy of feeling beautiful in your own skin. As a plus size content creator, I have been a bigger person (5’11, 300+lbs.) my entire life. I grew up in a time when there were limited options for plus size teenagers and I was constantly being fat shamed in certain outfits that I chose to wear. I made a promise to myself that when I became an adult I would live fearlessly and wear whatever makes me feel beautiful. I hope that others will see that they can live the life they’ve always dreamt for themselves. Style is a huge part of our identity and creativity. It allows us to express ourselves in a variety of ways that are authentic. I encourage those who have had a hard time in their bodies with self-love and acceptance to start with their wardrobe first. Believe you’re worthy and curate an outfit that makes you feel it deep down in your soul!

Give us three principles that you live by that have added to your success? It can be a quote or your own personal values.

Three principles that I live by:

  1. Choose happiness and spread positivity.

  2. Use your struggles in life as the fuel that ignites your fire.

  3. Practice confidence.

In my youth, I was raised by my mom and my father was never in the picture; and l grew up in poverty. I was also 5’11, plus size, and biracial and I never really felt like I fit in anywhere. My family couldn’t afford much clothing and from a young age I had to make do with what I had. I decided in my early 20’s that no matter how much or how little I had, I would always be worthy. I used all the hurt in my life as the fuel to my success. I wasn’t naturally a confident person, so I had to learn how to hold my head high and practice it every day. I noticed the more positivity and confidence I gave in this world, the more it came back to me. It’s a beautiful thing when you can simultaneously help others and yourself!
